Starting To Collect Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Many people, young and old, say collecting loose gemstones or loose diamonds is their favorite hobby. They simply love the beauty and the colors Of the assorted number of gemstones found around the world today. Follow along as we discuss a number of things you need to know in starting in this interesting hobby.

To begin with you'll need the knowledge on the various gemstones available. This knowledge will help you to know what you're buying so you buy the right items. This will help you make informed decisions.

First on the list to evaluate is gemstone color. Without a doubt, gemstones are the most intensely colored natural materials you can find. Gemstones are so related to color that they've even become associated with particular ones. Without a doubt you will recognize sapphire blue, ruby red, jade green, aquamarine, emerald green or turquoise. Gemstones become higher in value the closer they come to the natural spectral colors of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. They become less valuable when they are lighter or darker than the pure spectral color.

Gemstone cut is very important and factors into appraisal of diamonds but gemstones as well. A precision cut gemstone highlights the pure color of the stone, diminish any inclusions, and show off its symmetry and proportions. One way to determine the precision of its cut is to check how consistently it reflects the light throughout its surface. If the gemstone is cut to shallow most of this light were refracted away rather than reflecting inside the stone. The gem appears washed out.

Next to look at is the aspect of clarity. The aspect of clarity refers to the internal flaws ( known as inclusions) or the outside blemishes of a stone being considered. Normally large flaws are visible to the naked eye with others requiring a 10X magnification.

Next up are size and weight. Except for corals and pearls, all gemstones are priced by the carat. One carat is the equivalent of 0.2 grams You should know however that size and weight and gemstones are not the same. The density and specific gravity can differ in stones. If you have a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats, you will find a similar sized ruby or sapphire is 1.20 carats.

Taking up the hobby of gemstones can give you an enjoyable pastime and also rewarding in the long run. It doesn't have to be very expensive and yet you can buy some very beautiful items. Many people loved to spend weekends to go hunting gemstones. For example in Hawaii you can find Peridot and Coral. Or you can take the time to travel and find opal at Lightning Ridge in NSW, Austalia, topaz in Killiecrankie, Tasmania or hunt the peridot fields in Mortlake in Victoria, Australia.

Microcrystalline opals are made up of a microcrystalline material which is a
crystallized substance or rock which contains small crystals that are visible
only through microscopic examination. These opals are broken into two categories
: Opal-CT is where a predominant mineral rich layer is present within the opal
layers. They are all genuine minerals that formed from evaporating water with
low amounts of soluble silica. They are not Opal-A because the A type of opals
thrived during dry spells with very little water input.

The precious opal has a unique internal structure. It is made up of spheres that
are closely packed in layers that eventually form something that looks like a
four-sided triangle or a hexagon. They are made up of silica that allows light
to pass through the structure like a prism to produce internal colors, and it
also determines the quality of the stone. A precious opal has a doublet which is
a colorful material laid on a black backing of ironstone, basalt or obsidian.
This causes "a play of color" which produces a spectrum of different colors.
