The first thing you need to do is to visit the library and get some books. You want to know as much as possible about your new hobby. The more you learn about the hobby of gemstones the wiser will be your purchases. You'll know exactly what to buy.

The chief thing you need to look at should be gemstone color. You want the stone to be as close as possible to the pure spectrum colors. We are talking about violet, orange, yellow, green, blue, and red. The prices for very pale or very dark gemstones are lower in value.

Stone cut is the second most important factor to consider before a purchase is made. The precision of cut is the factor which determines how much light the stone will reflect. It will fully factor highly in the brilliance of the stone and its final value.

Our next consideration is the aspect of clarity. Clarity is the term that refers to the internal conclusions or flaws of a stone. Normally large flaws can be seen with the unaided eye with others needing to be magnified 10X

Next up are weight and size. Save for pearls and corals, all gemstones are valued by the unit called the carat. One carat equals a 0.2 grams. You should know however that weight and size are not always equal and gemstones. Density or specific gravity can vary in gemstones. If you have a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats, you will find a similar sized ruby or sapphire weighs 1.20 carats.

Although gemstones are normally used for jewelry, loose gemstones are great for collecting. Actually there are many interesting and attractive gemstones who that are too fragile or too large to be used in jewelry. Take each gemstone and consider it as a piece of art and value it for its unique nature and vibrant colors. And unlike some hobbies that require you to pay for your specimens you can find your raw materials through field trips In the United States in New Hampshire you can rock hunt for Beryl, Rock Crystal and Garnet. This beautiful stone can be seen in a variety of colors, often more than one color occurring simultaneously in the same crystal. This is called color zoning. This stone can be heated to produce a bi-colored effect, but this is a tedious and costly procedure that is not often used. Therefore, most bi-colored fluorite is natural.
