Collecting Loose Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Many people, young and old, say collecting loose gemstones or loose diamonds is their favorite hobby. They simply love the beauty and the colors Of the assorted number of gemstones you can find just about everywhere in the world. Follow along as we discuss a number of things you need to know in starting in this hobby.

To start off right you need to learn all you can on each of the gemstones out there. This knowledge will help you to know what you're buying and prevent you from wasting your money. A knowledgeable buyer is a wise one.

Color is a subjective idea but a very important part in giving value to a gemstone. The closer a color is to its pure spectral color the more valuable it is. Traditional spectral colors include red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. Colors that tend to be paler or darker are considered a lower value.

The cut of the stone is extremely important and factors into appraisal of diamonds but gemstones as well. An excellent cut will highlight the natural color of the gemstone, diminishes its inclusions, and highlight the proportions and symmetry of the stone. One way to determine the precision of gemstone cut is to consider how consistent and well, it reflects the light over its entire surface. If the gemstone is cut to shallow most of this light were refracted away rather than reflecting inside. That will make the gem seem washed out and windowed.

Our next consideration is the aspect of gemstone clarity. Clarity refers to the the external blemishes or the internal conclusions or flaws of a stone. Normally large flaws you can usually see with your naked eye while others require close examination using a 10X magnification.

You will note that gemstones are categorized according to size because of being more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may be the same size but different carat weights and consequently, different prices as well. This is due to the difference regarding relative density or specific gravity and depends on the materials chemical composition and crystalline structure. A one carat round brilliant diamond, for example of typical proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A comparable a brilliant ruby of the same proportions in size will weigh approximately 1.55 carats.

Collecting gemstones can be a great hobby. And there are so many different types when it comes to gemstones. You can start collecting gemstones like Alexandrite and other varieties of chrysoberyl, Pyrite or Andalusite and then try others. The opportunities are seemingly endless. And if you like a hands on hobby you can go gemstone hunting and find the raw materials instead of buying them. For example in Wyoming you can find Agate (including Moss Agate), Jade, Ruby, Jasper, Bloodstone as well as Star Sapphire.

Peridot belongs to the forsterite-fayalite mineral series, which is part of the olivine group. It is one of the "idiochromatic" gems, meaning its color comes from the basic chemical composition of the mineral itself, not from minor impurities, and therefore will only be found in shades of green. As a matter of fact peridot is one of the few gemstones found in only one color.

Dispersion is the splitting of white light into its spectral colours, as with light transmitted through a prism. It is also called fire when describing the dispersion seen in gemstones; diamond is a good example with a high dispersion value. Diamonds may be cut to increase dispersion at the sacrifice of brilliance or vice versa as described above in the brilliance description. The fire in opal is caused by the dispersion of light through its unique hydrous silica structure. The amount of dispersion in gemstones can be given in figures, but is generally described simply as low, medium and high.
