How To Collect Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Many people, young and old, say collecting semi-precious and precious gemstones like loose diamonds or loose gemstones is a passionate hobby. They simply love the beauty and the colors of the wide array of gemstones you can find just about everywhere in the world. Follow along as we discuss a number of things you need to know when starting this gemstone hobby.

Right at the beginning, what you need is to get yourself some books on gemstones. You want to know everything there is to know about precious and semiprecious gemstones. The more you learn about the hobby of gemstones the better off you'll be. With adequate knowledge you are less likely to be fooled.

The chief thing you need to look at will be the color of the gemstone. You'll want the gemstone to be as close as possible to the pure colors of the spectrum. This means violet, orange, yellow, green, blue, and red. Generally, the prices very pale or very dark precious and semi precious gemstones are lower than the vibrant colors.

Gemstone cut is very important and is used not only to appraise diamonds but along with your gemstones. A good cut highlights the pure color of the stone, diminishes its inclusions, and highlight the proportions and symmetry of the stone. One way to determine the precision of gemstone cut is to consider how well and consistent it reflects light throughout the surface of the stone. If the stone is cut on the shallow side most of this light were refracted away rather than reflecting inside the stone. Gemstone color will be washed out.

The next factor to consider is the gemstone's clarity. This is talking about the stones purity or the absence of internal inclusions, internal particles or spots inside the crystal. Obviously, stones with a lack of flaws are hard to find and make your stones very valuable.

Next up are size and weight. Save for pearls and corals, all gemstones are priced by the unit, carat. One carat is the equivalent of 0.2 grams You should know however that weight and size are not always equal and gemstones. The density and specific gravity can differ in stones. If you have a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats, you will find a similar sized ruby or sapphire weighs 1.20 carats.

Though you may find gemstones used a lot in jewelry, loose gemstones are great for collecting. Actually there are many interesting and attractive gems that are too fragile or too large to be used in jewelry. Take each gemstone and consider it as a piece of art and value it for its unusual nature and for the craftsmanship of the artisan who shaped it. And unlike some hobbies that require you to pay for your specimens you can use vacation time to actually hunt for raw gemstones in stead of buying. In the US in Maine you can find Tourmaline, Beryl, Rose Quartz, Pearl, Topaz, Amazonite, Clear & Smoky Quartz and Aquamarine. And in Canada you can find nephrite jade in Mount Sidney Williams, British Columbia or labradorite on Tabor Island, and even amethyst from Nova Scotia. Take up a hobby of loose gemstone collecting and enjoy yourself.

The Clarity of a diamond is based on the number, location, size, and type of
inclusions found in the stone. An inclusion is an imperfection or trace mineral
in the stone that is visible under the magnification of a jeweler's loupe. The
fewer inclusions the diamond has; the clearer, more brilliant and more expensive
the diamond will be. A "Flawless" diamond is one that has no inclusions and is
extremely rare and valuable.
